Sponsored by Chobhar Café, the Sculpture Garden opened its doors to the public in August 2004. Specializing in Modern Art, the art displayed there is very different from any other collection anywhere else in Nepal. First and foremost, our focus is on “avant garde” works.
Artists are thus given a unique opportunity to contribute new ideas, concepts and forms to the project. Sculptures may be futuristic, symbolic, or any other style to the extent that they espouse the future and leave the past well behind. In this context, the nature of the invitation we extend to those talented artists who aspire to join us in this project is an open invitation to “break with the past”
Works in the Sculpture Garden are carefully selected by a Committee composed of well-known personalities in the modern art field in Nepal, including the owner of Kathmandu’s leading art gallery, an art column reviewer and a number of art lovers. The Committee is headed by Theo of Chobhar Café, whose brainchild this project is. The Curator of the Sculpture Garden - as well as contributing artist - is Puran Khadka, whose works are in numerous private collections. |

We have also added native stone works to the Garden, by
acquiring local pieces from the village:
In addition, we purchased a 1000 year old Shiva Lingam
which was placed close to the renovated stonehouse.

We are also studying the possibility of including a major
work by Puran Khadka. Please refer to sketch by the
artist shown above. When completed, this work will measure approximately
15 feet, and be triangular in shape ( three sided)
The curator of the Sculpture Garden is currently
discussing plans to add an outdoor cube sculpture, to be
commissioned specially for us, in copper. The work will
be signed Manish Lal Shrestha.
